Functional Industrial Kitchen Design

By Andie

The Industrial Revolution may have taken place more than a century ago, but it still has an impact on home decor. Especially in the kitchen. The kitchen tends to be a gathering area of the home and its design should be welcoming and functional. Luckily, different design elements can come together and compliment each other well in this room– including farmhouse, rustic, and traditional. When some industrial design elements are added as well, it adds a bold appearance and a distinctive look that embraces the beauty of functionality.

Go Bright – When it comes to the kitchen area a well-lit room is a necessity. There are many different options available for lighting when it comes to the industrial look. Pendant lighting and DIY chandeliers are often choices for overhead lighting. Adding industrial lighting under the cabinetry gives a soft glow in the evening, but provides functional light while cleaning. The different lighting elements make the largest statement in the kitchen. Feel free to mix metals, bulbs, and wattage to give a multi-layered effect.

Black and White – Although it is a good idea to have plenty of light available in the kitchen area, black and white is also an excellent idea what it comes to an industrial look. This can be accomplished in a number of different ways but in some cases, a monochromatic wall is the best option to do so. Using blackboard paint is a fun option that many families consider. Not only does it help pull the black element into the kitchen, it also gives an opportunity for artwork, personal notes, and to-do lists.

Kitchen Appliances – One of the key features of any kitchen are the appliances and they are the tools that allow a family to cook at home and prepare the best foods they possibly can. There are many different appliances available that could easily pull in an industrial look and some of them are not only interesting to look at, they are also functional. Stainless steel is an option that can certainly be considered, but there are also some options that pull color into the mix as well.
